Sleeping through the night

Justin and I talk about Henry sleeping through the night the way other people talk about winning the lottery.

"We don't have to go to bed at 8 o'clock!"
"We'll watch movies at night!"
"We can sleep in the same bed!"
"We can read books!"
"We can go on a date!"
"We can feel good!"
"We can do our jobs without people thinking we have dementia!"

The worst part is the insomnia. When you have a baby that wakes you up a lot, sometimes every hour, it's difficult to commit to falling asleep. It's like if you're told that you can start eating this ice cream cone but at any second it could be snatched away from you. It makes you not even want to bother. Sleep feels soooooo good and being woken up feels sooooo bad. And after 5, almost 6 months of sleep deprivation it makes you feel like you no longer belong in the same group as the rest of humanity. It's like...wow...look at those people...they probably sleep at night. Humpf.

The good news is we have recently weaned from night feedings--except once or twice (this is a major cut-back from 5-8 times a night) and Henry is only co-sleeping half the night now. But he lasts about an hour in his crib and then 4-5 hours in a bouncy seat that his dear old dad rocks him in throughout the night. When Justin can no longer keep Henry asleep, he passes him off to me for the second shift. This is the only way we both get half a nights sleep. Justin has the first shift and I have the second.

Jealous?
