15 months

  • Henry has 16 teeth
  • Henry says bubble, car, up, down, ball, this, uh-oh, no, and mama and dada everyday and then he has about 8 others he's said but not everyday.
  • He signs 'finished' 'food' and 'more' everyday.
  • He can point to all of his body parts.
  • He can walk, run, stoop and get up again, and climb stairs.
  • Stack blocks, "read" a book, kick and throw a ball, dance and spin around.
  • He likes to copy us. If I'm cleaning he will go to the linen drawer and get a rag and then wipe the floor down. He's a big helper.
  • He's trying very hard to feed himself with a spoon/fork.
  • He can understand a lot of commands and knows the names of most common animals, clothing items, and some household objects. (I will ask him to point to the bear, touch your shirt etc.).
  • He weighs 25lbs 8 oz
  • He's 31 7/8 inches tall
  • His head is 50.0 (97%)
  • His eye color is greenish grayish blueish brown
  • Favorite foods are: avocados, broccoli, blueberries, mango, peas, apricots, peaches, melon, raisins and figs (really any fruit--fresh frozen or dried). He gobbles oatmeal down and most bread items. Loves eggs and mashed up beans. Likes chicken and turkey and will eat random things we give him like Indian food or tacos. He's just now being able to tolerate some dairy. Finally he can eat cheese.
  • Most fun thing in the world is dangling string in front of Kitty. Next is knocking on the glass front door and of course listening to music and reading books. He also really likes to march in place.
  • The thing that makes him angrier than hell is if he gets a toy snatched from his hands by another child or when mama and dada tell him he can't have the sharp, hot, dangerous item he wants. Other than that, he's cool.
  • He still goes to bed at 6:30 and wakes 11-12 hours later and he's still taking two naps. He averages about 14 hrs per day.

A big week for young Henry Voorhees

He's figured out how to pick his nose AND spin around and around till he's so dizzy he falls down.

We love books

I am not sure if this is strange behavior or if every kid does this but Henry is obsessed with books. We must keep all of his books in a separate room, away from his toys because he won't want to do anything but flip through the books and have them read to him. I'd say we own about 50 children's books (Henry's aunt used to be a kindergarten teacher) and each one has been read to him at least 200-300 times by now. I figure we read each book at least twice a day and this has been going on for months now so it's actually more than that. And some books we've read 5-6 times a day at his insistence.

Two books have been retired out of sheer exhaustion on our part. One is a pop up book called "The Napping House Wakes Up". Henry wanted this book read to him over and over and over again. If you walked into the back room and saw the book out you would curse yourself, feeling the same regret as if you left the back door open and rabid squirrels delivered babies on your carpet. "Oh shit I left the Napping house out!"

The other book is actually the first book Justin and I ever got Henry. We purchased it at the Texas Memorial museum gift shop when I was about 38 weeks pregnant. It's a collection of photos of baby animals. They are covered in slobber from all the times Henry has open mouthed kissed them.

I worry about running out of books the same way other mothers worry about running out of milk. Yesterday I had to make a mad dash to the library to get 12 more while Justin was home for lunch. Three of them have already been read 20 times each, at least. One is called "Hello, LuLu" and it's very simple. It's just pictures of LuLu describing her family. I'll read it and put it aside and he just picks it right back up and puts it in my lap. I try to hide it or distract him from LuLu and he goes crazy looking for it. "Lughlululughluuuuuu" he says.

We aren't buying anymore books. He goes through them so fast and I get sick of them so easily that I don't want to own them -- knowing the commitment I will have to them.

Noah and Henry

So, tell me more about this adolescence thing...it sounds good to me.

Henry learns life lessons from my former charge, Matthew D.

Language Explosion

In the last several days Henry has turned into Helen Keller at the water well. Yesterday we were reading books and one of them has photos of babies (but not actually the word baby) and he saw the photo and said "baby!". I was stunned!!! I know by now this should be normal to me but it surprises me each time it happens. Yesterday I asked him where the ball was and he pointed to it and said, "There". Again, it gave me whiplash. Also yesterday I said, "Are you hungry, do you want to eat?" and he gave me the sign for food (which I started doing a few weeks ago).

He's also copying us a lot lately. I got a stupid New Kids on the Block song stuck in my head (The Right Stuff) and started singing it to him in the car and then he copied the humming hook back to me (oh oh oh oh oh).

The other note about this language explosion is he knows a lot of words he can't say yet...more than I thought. I can point to something and ask him what it is and he gives me the 1 year old version of how it's pronounced. I pointed to a zebra and he said "e-ah".

He can point to his facial parts now too, if you ask. So it's probably confusing for him when I say I'm going to eat his nose.
