I left Silvia in Detroit

This was her first and only doll. I had her on the plane with us to keep Eleanor happy and then when we changed planes in Detroit, she somehow got left. I'm grief stricken. I am not a very sentimental person and it took me awhile to accept that Silvia was pretty special b/c I hate designating things as being important. I do not have good luck holding on to important things. This is why I can't have a nice phone. I lose or break a cell phone about every 4 months so my brother sends me the oldest junkiest phones (he works for Verizon). I sent Justin a text message that I left Silvia in Detroit and he wrote back "Oh My God." Yes, that's how sad this is. I have thought about calling Delta b/c I'm positive she was left on the plane but I know it's pretty hopeless. She either went right to the trash or she's in some giant storage area smashed between someone's dirty socks and a couple copies of Twilight, never to be seen again.

We had a very nice time otherwise. I'll write about it later when I'm less bereaved.

7 Months

Eleanor and Silvia. Her dolly that she loves.

Eleanor is 7 months old today. I feel a little choked up saying that. 7 months seems like...a long time. A big girl. An older baby. She is such a good girl. She is so smiley and happy and easy and wonderful and cuddly. She just wants to play and play and smile and laugh and sleep.

Tomorrow Eleanor and I are flying to Pittsburgh to see my brother and sister in law and to attend my very dear friend's baby shower. I would not normally make such an effort to attend a baby shower but I've known Marci since 5th grade and she was a bridesmaid at my wedding. I will be leaving Henry for the first time...ever. He's never been away from me longer than 8 hours and never further than 5 miles in distance. E and I will be gone 4 days and 3 nights. I am sort of freaked out and nervous about how we'll both do (Henry and I). At the same time, I'm looking forward to having Eleanor all to myself. Stay tuned for 50,000 pictures. I'm not even going to bring my camera since my brother will probably document every other second we're there:-)

Eleanor is probably close to 20 lbs. Not sure on measurements but will know in the next couple weeks when we go in for the next round of immunizations. I'm breaking them up and delaying just slightly. She had a mild reaction with them so I'm just going a little slower this time. She is waking up 1-3 times per night. She eats for about 5 min. and falls right back to sleep. She's in the crib now so it's a little more effort for me to get her out to feed her but it's not too bad. She naps 3 times a day. She could do a 9:00, 12:00, 4:00 nap schedule if Henry didn't wake her up in the morning. He's very loud, you see. So she's up between 6 and 7, about 45 min to an hour earlier than she wants to be which makes all her naps about 1 hour earlier. She goes to bed between 6 and 7...just depends on us. She gets about 15 hrs. per day.

She eats a solid meal once a day and tastes various foods two or three times a day. She is getting several teeth at once right now, just how Henry did. She is most amused by her brother and I love to see them interact. They take their baths together. He is tall enough to push her in her stroller. He kisses her. He makes her laugh. He snatches toys right out of her hands...

Henry's Lion

Henry made this at school this week. His teacher was very excited to show me and I can see why.

We're tired.

We've been taking pictures and video but too exhausted to post anything. I think it's the heat.

Henry's taking swim lessons with his friends Mae, Moses and Henry Wallace. It's hot.

Eleanor is a good girl sleeping in her crib. Happy as can be except when she wants to be put down for a nap and then she starts yelling. I gave her some of my popsicle the other day. Second children get to eat popsicles at 6 months old.

Henry's been hard. Three years old is insane. I knew he was gonna get us somehow. Tantrums. Demands. Grumpiness. We had a great day today until bath time and he cried (howled and screamed) b/c he had to stop playing and take a bath. Then howled and screamed b/c he had to get his hair washed. Howled and screamed b/c he had to brush his teeth. Howled and screamed b/c book time was over. Howled and screamed because time to get in bed and stay there.

I guess it's really not that bad considering the previous 11 hours of the day were pretty great. We played playdo. He rode his big boy bike around the neighborhood while I walked with E. We went to swim class. Played with friends. Napped 3 hours. Went grocery shopping. Played outside. Played inside. Ate things. Read books.

We'll put up pics this weekend.

Thank you

I am feeling thankful today. Well, I'm thankful everyday but I have time now since everyone is napping to say what I'm thankful for. (in no particular order)

Aunt Sandy for sending us so many cool books and notes and prezzies. Henry walked around with the toy binoculars for quite some time and his new favorite book is the Opposites book from the 70's. It's black and white photographs and reminds me of my childhood. I think they must have made better books back then. His other new fav is the other 1970's activity book. He knows all of it now and wants to do it over and over. Thank you so much for sending us all those books.

Thankful to Jennifer, Justin's former co-worker for quilting us a beautiful blanket for Eleanor. She sits on it everyday during playtime's.

Thankful for Dennis helping Justin put the siding on the back of the house, among the zillion other house projects you've helped us with.

Thankful to Paula for the birthday presents. I love my new hat and skirts and shoes!!!! Henry's been loving those new blocks too.

Thankful to Gary for driving all the way to Texas so we don't have to fly to Illinois:-)

Thankful to my mom-friends for making this so much more fun.

Thankful to my mom for all the love and affection. Thankful to my parents for paying for my college. Thankful to my parents for all the traveling we did growing up. Thankful to my parents for braces. Thankful to my parents for all the museums and fancy restaurants we got dragged to. Thankful to my parents for taking us to the movies. Thankful to my parents for their generosity.

Thankful to Justin for all the hard work, the friendship, the fun and laughter, the support.

Thankful to my brother for a ton of really fun times and wonderful memories. Thankful to my brother for all the kindnesses. Thankful you're Henry and Eleanor's Uncle. Thankful to Rachel for marrying my brother and making him so happy.

Thankful to live on a street where I know all my kind neighbors and feel safe.

Thankful Henry and Eleanor's naps overlap.

Thankful Eleanor easily transitioned to a crib and seems to love it.

Thankful we own both our cars.

Thankful I love my son's preschool and never worry about him when he's there.

Thankful for Chela.

Thankful for the Beaver/Duncan family and their friendship over the last 15 years.

Thankful I got so much time with my grandparents.

Eleanor laughs...

...a lot. And it comes very easily. With Henry, we had to work hard for laughs. We'd even bust out routines when we thought it might help. He was always mildly amused at best. Eleanor practically gives them out.

Henry definitely gets the most, but we do alright.

He did great in his new classroom...

He got sad at nap time b/c they didn't remember to give him his sheet (I should have stressed the importance of it instead of just telling them where I put it.)

From his teacher:

Henry had a very good day today! His drop off, as you saw, was great - he was very eager to share his Elmo with the class and he made sure to give his friends a turn at pressing Elmo's hand to make him talk/sing. He thoroughly enjoyed the water play, and had fun filling up the buckets and pouring them out, and also playing in the small pools. I was really impressed with how well he expressed himself with his friends - if someone splashed him and he didn't want to be splashed, he made sure to tell them very clearly that he didn't like it and asked them to stop. He ate very well for lunch as well. At nap time, he was a little sad and asked for you, but I reassured him that Justin would be picking up after nap, and I sat with him for a bit, which helped him fall asleep. He took a good nap after that, and woke up in a great mood. He listened to a couple of stories at the listening center and he had fun playing with the legos this afternoon also.

I was really impressed with Henry, as well as his classmates, because they all handled the transition very well, and did a great job adjusting to the new classroom.

Please and thank you...

This morning I took Henry with me to get the oil changed while Eleanor was napping at home with Chela. I brought Henry's tricycle b/c the place I like to go to is in a residential neighborhood with sidewalks and lots of trees and old houses with petite porches. I really love that part of Hyde Park -- but it's also where a lot of students live. I was following Henry and feeling nostalgic for Europe b/c, well, it smelled like Europe. I couldn't put my finger on it. And then I did. Car exhaust, beer and urine, mixed with birds chirping, flowers, early morning sunshine, and coffee.

After Henry collected all the rotten, ant riddled fruit from various trees and placed them in his basket, we headed back to the lube place. Austin is great. Probably the only city that has a hip lube joint attached to a coffee shop. There was an older guy reading the paper and playing with his white braided beard and just looking so late 1960's and a 20-ish girl chain smoking and reading something impressive, while Henry rode around in circles.

Friday was the last day of school for Henry, however, he is in the summer camp at his school. He's with all his same friends but has new teachers. I was worried he might freak out b/c he LOVED Miss Ashley and Miss Maggie and has had them since he was 20 months old. But he walked in the new room and was excited to see all his friends and didn't seem to mind he was in a different room with two new teachers (well, old...Ms. Rosemary is probably in her 60's and has been teaching at St. George's for 30 something years. She's English and rides her bike to school). Henry's old teachers made him a "diploma" of sorts. It listed all of his major milestones over the last year, but they were more like Henry-isms. It listed his period of time when he walked into the room and acted like a lion and noted the period of time when he would point out the images on his Tshirts to all his friends ("Look Harper, I have a truck on my shirt"). I got sorta teary about how well the teachers knew my boy and had picked up on all his isms.

Today when I was leaving to come to work, Eleanor was a bit fussy and even though she'd only been awake since her last nap about an hour and a half, I felt like she was sleepy. Chela was sure she was hungry and frantically got everything ready to feed her. I had this panicked moment of "Oh God does Chela know my daughter better than me?" and then E rubbed her eyes, threw the spoon and I exhaled.

And last but not least, Grandma Paula was here this weekend. She was complimentary of our parenting and told us how she would never tell us how to parent but that it would be nice to hear Henry say Please and Thank You. Which, he does, but it's not consistent and we don't make a fuss about it. But I had a talk with him and told him that it makes adults really happy when you tell them Please and Thank You and now he's doing it every single time (we'll see how long this lasts) but I gotta say, when he's bossing me around but saying Please, it does make me feel less annoyed and it does make me happy:-)
