I am thankful for...
Henry. My goofy goober son. Last year I was thankful for him but I was too sleep deprived to fully appreciate his enormous contribution to my life.
Now that I get my 8 hours, Henry makes me feel like writing love letters everyday. Justin and I are both smitten. To say we are in love is an understatement. He's all we talk or think about and we constantly marvel at the obscured void that existed in our lives before having him.
I am so thankful for the joy Henry brings us. I am so thankful he slept till 8:15 this morning and went down instantly at 12:05 PM for nap. I am thankful for his dancing skillz and silly facial expressions. I am thankful for the sound he makes when he says car (it sounds like he's practicing Hebrew). I am thankful that he only poops once a day. I am thankful he eats almost anything I put in front of him.
I could go on and on but suffice to say I am most thankful for my family and good health and my wonderful friends and community. We are lucky people.

Guess what Diane's thinking about today...
That's right. Elmo.
Mostly, I'm curious what Henry thinks about Elmo--in terms of his role in the world. I mean, he's got to be the most important "person" in Henry's life besides Justin and I. Elmo's face is on his dishes, his clothes, his toothbrush, his diapers, several toys, including an actual life sized Elmo that he likes to diaper and carry around with him. And Elmo's presence is not just limited to our house. Elmo is at the grocery store, on boxes of snacks, balloons, on other kids clothes and shoes. Elmo is in books, on CD's and most importantly, Elmo is on TV. Elmo is like the western toddler's version of Kim Jong Il. He's everywhere and as an American mother, I have no choice. If I want to raise my child in a democracy, Elmo is part of the deal.
Who knew a grammatically idiotic muppet could wield so much power?

Bus Ride
Aside from helicopters, one of Henry's favorite things in the world are buses. So we took him on one a few weeks back. He thought it was pretty great.

Two new parenting milestones
My friend Liz visited us yesterday and brought Henry an oatmeal raisin cookie. He did the exact same thing with the cookie my brother gave him which was to hold it in his mouth and suck on it with both his hands clinging to the edges of it. It's like he doesn't want the cookie to ever leave his mouth so he doesn't chew it--he just holds it in place till it dissolves.
Anyway, last night Justin baked cookies for his work party and as he was leaving this morning I said, "Don't forget your cookies" so he went to go get them. On his way out the door Henry started jumping up and reaching for them and saying cookie, cookie, cookie--but there was no way to tell that's what they were!
So the first new parenting milestone:
We have to start spelling, especially things like c o o k i e. And we definitely have to stop swearing. Perhaps we can just spell our s h i t s and d a m n s?
And second:
Keep your hands to yourself.
(I said this last week at the playground and I practically started snorting as it flew out of my mouth unexpectedly. Such a parenting top 10! I feel so initiated.)
In other news, I really can't count the amount of words Henry can now say. I guessed it was 50-60 but it's got to be way more than that. He is saying at least 2-3 new ones a day. Yesterday was HUGE. He said the two most powerful words in the English language. "Help" and "thank you". He also gave his first command, "sit". He wanted me to sit in the sand box with him, not on the bench.
He's only been up 3 hours today (he's taking a nap now since he woke at 5:30) and he's already said a new word. "Bat". An important new word for an Austinite.
New word UPDATE at 1:40 PM CST
He now says "eat"
